Bishop McNamara Theatre is first and foremost a performing theatre, staging productions which are professional, entertaining, dramatic, and artistic. Bishop McNamara Theatre is also a teaching theatre, in which students are taught not merely the arts of acting, singing, and dancing, but of set-building, lighting, sound production, costuming, make-up, and stage management. The highest standards for performing and teaching are maintained, with experienced theatre professionals preparing students to continue theatre both in college and professionally. Students are awarded academic credit for participation in productions, as well as for course offerings during the school day. The Fine Arts Diploma Endorsement Program recognizes students who are significally committed to their theatrical training throughout their high school careers.
The theatre mounts two main-stage productions each school year — a musical in the fall and a non-musical in the spring. The Thespians, McNamara's standing body of theatre students, put on a Theatre Workshop for younger students, as well as Oscar Night, the end-of-season awards celebration. The Theatre Boosters is composed of parents who support the theatre through volunteer activities. The theatre also provides academic scholarships for talented students.
